Cape Verde, an island nation in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa, has become a key maritime gateway connecting Africa, Europe, and the Americas thanks to its unique geographic location. Within the global trade landscape, Cape Verde is actively positioning itself as an Atlantic logistics hub. However, its geography—made up of ten islands—also brings distinct challenges to its logistics system.
⚽ Fun fact: Beyond logistics, there’s also the star goalkeeper Vozinha!
Speaking of Cape Verde, it would be remiss not to mention their national hero—goalkeeper Vozinha. He has made over 70 appearances for the national team and is a legend in Cape Verdean football history. Vozinha’s consistent performance and resilience on the pitch perfectly reflect the tenacity of this island nation’s people in the face of the ocean’s challenges.
A Strategic Stronghold in the Atlantic
The Cape Verde archipelago sits at the crossroads of major global shipping routes and historically served as an important resupply stop for transatlantic trade. Today, the government is working to develop it into a modern “Atlantic logistics hub.” The special economic zone around São Vicente and its core port, Porto Grande, has attracted substantial international investment.
Modernizing Ports and Infrastructure
Cape Verde continues to enhance its transshipment capabilities. Porto Grande offers 6,000 tonnes of refrigerated storage capacity, which is vital for fisheries exports. In addition, the EU has invested €246 million to expand the port through the “Global Gateway” initiative, while the airports are operated by Vinci Airports to improve efficiency.
Inter-Island Logistics: The Challenge of a Fragmented Geography
Despite its strategic advantages, domestic logistics faces severe challenges. As an archipelagic nation, cargo transport relies heavily on sea and air freight. Maritime services often suffer from aging vessels and significant delays (around 50% of sailings are delayed by 3–6 hours), which directly drives up logistics costs and undermines supply-chain efficiency for moving local products to the tourism islands.
The Blue Economy and Trade Opportunities
Fish processing accounts for 80% of total exports and is a pillar of the national economy. Cape Verde benefits from preferential access to the EU and U.S. (AGOA) markets, and its potential as a transshipment point for the West African market creates extensive opportunities for warehousing, packaging, and assembly services.
