[One infographic to understand EXW, FCA, and FOB! No more anxiety when quoting in international trade!]
If you are engaged in cross-border e-commerce or international trade, do you often feel overwhelmed when you see EXW, FCA, and FOB in quotations? Do not worry. This infographic will help you easily understand the key differences among these three Incoterms, enabling you to quote accurately and manage risks and costs.
The most fundamental differences among these three terms lie in who bears the “risk transfer point” and the “cost responsibility.”
🔴 EXW (Ex Works) Ex Works
The seller has the minimum obligation and only needs to have the goods ready at the factory. Risk transfers to the buyer once delivery is completed at the factory. The buyer is responsible for all subsequent costs (loading, customs clearance, transportation, etc.). Suitable when the seller wants maximum simplicity and the buyer has strong logistics capabilities.
🔵 FCA (Free Carrier) Free Carrier
The seller is responsible for delivering the goods to the designated place (e.g., the buyer’s freight forwarder warehouse) and completing export customs clearance. Risk transfers to the buyer when the goods are handed over to the carrier. Suitable for B2B scenarios, especially when the buyer has more professional customs clearance capabilities.
🟡 FOB (Free on Board) Free on Board
The seller is responsible for delivering the goods to the port of shipment and loading them onto the vessel designated by the buyer. Risk transfers from the seller to the buyer once the goods are on board. This is the most traditional term and is suitable when the buyer fully controls ocean freight.
Summary mnemonic:
👉 EXW = Buyer handles everything (early risk transfer)
👉 FCA = Delivered to carrier (seller clears export customs)
👉 FOB = Risk transfers once on board (most traditional ocean freight)
