The container ship ‘Sky Challenge’ ran aground while attempting to berth during port operations, involving multiple slot-sharing container companies and calling at Chinese ports

On July 28, in the early hours, the container ship “Sky Challenge” encountered an accident at the port of Busan, South Korea. While attempting to berth after refueling preparations, the ship lost control and collided with the port’s breakwater, resulting in the vessel running aground in the harbor waters. The incident occurred around 2:05 AM local time, and further investigation is needed to determine the exact cause.

The “Sky Challenge,” built in 2014, has a capacity of 1900 TEUs and flies the South Korean flag. It is operated by CK Line, a South Korean feeder operator, and serves the Asia-NKT route, with regular calls at Chinese ports such as Hong Kong and Shenzhen Shekou. Originally scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong on August 2 and subsequently dock at Shenzhen Shekou on August 3 before proceeding to Laem Chabang, Thailand, this collision incident has forced the ship to suspend its voyage and may significantly impact its subsequent itinerary.

Notably, the “Sky Challenge” involves several slot-sharing container companies, including CNC (under Daebo), KMTC, Namsung, and CK Line itself. Consequently, this incident not only affects CK Line’s operations but may also disrupt logistics arrangements for other cooperating carriers.

Given the importance of the planned calls at Hong Kong and Shenzhen Shekou, as well as the involvement of multiple slot-sharing partners, relevant freight forwarders and international trade companies should closely monitor developments. Timely communication with the operating carrier is crucial to understanding the specific impact of the collision incident on subsequent sailings and adjusting logistics plans to mitigate potential losses.
